Spam is also way too common a problem and isn't really 100% stoppable but you can cut way down on the amount you receive.
First of all, don't ever open an email from an unknown source. Doing so can allow viruses and/or spyware to be allowed to run.
Outlook and Outlook Express has a preview frame you should shut off for the same reason. Most webmail and email programs
have filters you can set up to automatically delete emails with certain words in the subject or body of the email.



Shut off preview frames in Outlook and Outlook Express
In Outlook: go to View up at the top, then reading pane, then choose disable.
In Outlook Express: go to View, layout, then uncheck the box that says Show Preview Pane.
